The Florida Department of Health (FLDOH) is committed to making its Web sites accessible to all visitors and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 508 accessibility standards. Accessible Web design provides benefits to individuals using assistive technology, as well as providing benefits to users with text-based browsers, low-end processors, slow modem connections, or users who do not have state-of-the-art computer equipment. Section 508 of the Americans with Disabilities Act establishes requirements for electronic and information technology developed, maintained, procured, or used by the Federal government. Section 508 requires Federal electronic and information technology to be accessible to all people with disabilities, including employees and members of the public. The Florida Department of Health has included several features designed to improve accessibility. Some of these features are described below.

  1. Images on the site contain “alt tags” with descriptions of the image, which aid users who listen to the content of the site by using a screen reader, rather than reading the site.
  2. Text and background colors are required to be high contrast.
  3. Audio and video clips are accompanied by plain text scripts.
  4. PDF files are accompanied by links to the latest version of the free Acrobat Reader and Adobe accessibility information. The latest versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader integrate with most screen readers to read PDF files aloud.
  5. Alternative language translations are provided when possible.
  6. All web pages are tested for compliance with accessibility standards and to identify possible barriers to accessibility in web pages.
  7. Web pages incorporate skip navigation which is a method for skipping to page content, sidebar, header, and footer navigation for individuals using assistive technology.
  8. All documents, files, or hyperlinks which open in a new browser window incorporate a new window warning to alert the user and assist with assistive technology navigation.
